William Chan on The Globe and Mail’s Behind the Advice: family, money, and the future of AI

I recently joined Brenda Bouw on Behind the Advice, The Globe and Mail’s podcast about financial advice and the people who give it. In about 20 minutes, we talked about family, money, and where financial planning is headed in the age of AI.

Building a career around what matters most

A financial plan only works if it serves the life you actually want. That belief shaped how I built Modern Vision Planning. When the pandemic gave me the chance to rethink my own priorities, I took it and built a practice around the things that matter most, starting with family.

Today I work with families across Mississauga and the GTA, and I bring that same question to every financial planning conversation: what do you want your money to make possible? The full story is in the episode, and I’d love for you to listen.

What we talked about

  • The decision behind building my own independent practice
  • How I approach conversations about money with my kids
  • How artificial intelligence is changing the way planners work with clients

My take: AI is raising the bar for financial advisors

AI is a major shift for our industry, and I see it as a push for advisors to level up. Technology now handles research, number-crunching, and routine tasks faster than ever. That makes the human part of the job more valuable. Understanding a family’s goals, values, and concerns, and guiding them through big decisions, still takes a person.

For clients, that’s good news. When the routine work is automated, the advice itself has to get better. Planners who add real context and judgment will stand out. Those who only deliver information will find it harder.

Frequently asked questions

Will AI replace financial advisors?
In my view, no. AI is changing what advisors spend their time on, which raises the standard for the advice itself. Planners who offer real guidance and context will stand out.

What does an independent financial planner do differently?

An independent planner can look at your whole financial picture, rather than a single company’s offerings. At Modern Vision Planning, I work with families across Mississauga and the GTA on
comprehensive financial planning built around their goals.

How is AI changing financial planning in Canada?
AI tools are speeding up research, analysis, and administrative work. The advisor’s role is shifting toward judgment, communication, and helping clients make decisions that fit their lives.
